Why We Use SR500 Steel
At Feuer Industries, we build targets for shooters who expect more than a disposable piece of steel. That is why we use SR500 on our premium target systems instead of relying only on traditional AR500 or AR550 plate.
Most steel targets on the market are made from abrasion-resistant steel originally designed for industrial wear applications. AR500 and AR550 are proven materials, but they were not developed specifically for repeated ballistic impact. SR500 is selected for the way it balances hardness, impact resistance, surface durability, and long-term target performance.
For steel targets, the goal is simple: keep the face of the target as smooth and flat as possible for as long as possible. A smooth target face helps bullets fragment more predictably when used at proper distances and angles. Once a target begins to pit, crater, or deform, it can become less consistent and may need to be retired. Safety guides for steel targets commonly warn against shooting damaged, cratered, or uneven steel surfaces.
SR500 gives us the durability advantage we want without sacrificing the practical performance shooters need. It helps resist pitting, cratering, and surface deformation better than standard AR500, while offering a strong balance of toughness and impact resistance compared to harder steels. That means longer target life, cleaner impact surfaces, better value over time, and more confidence every time you send rounds downrange.
